I moved from Melbourne to Sydney and decided to dedicate as much free time as I could to learning to surf. Why wouldn't you if you lived in one of the best surf spots on the planet! Over five years later and I'm hooked 1000%. Not much beats surfing!
On a longboard, I'm intermediate. On a shortboard, I'm a beginner.
9' 6" McTavish Redline, 8' 6" McTavish Carver, 6' 6" Bear Fat Ass Wombat, 6' 6" Al Merrick Flyer II. The boards are listed in the order in which I surf them from frequent to once-in-a-blue-moon.
I've got a spring, steamer and sleeve-less wetsuit top. The steamer is expensive, but worth ever cent in winter. I've had two in six years.
I took over the group in early 2009, but can't remember how I found it in the first place. Someone probably told me or I was just wandering through the Meetup groups for Sydney. Either way, I'm here to stay now!
Manly side. I'd say 95% of my sessions have been on the northern beaches. Now I'm keen to explore whatever spot is recommended.
"I'm obsessed with surfing and started a diary to help me remember the journey. Mastering surfing is really tough and it gives me a great sense of achievement to go back over the journey. A year ago I moved the diary online for all to see."
If you've been surfing for years, reconnect with the past by seeing beginners learning stuff you'd mastered years ago. It will make you a more humble and appreciative surfer. If you're a beginner, get support and encouragement from surfer who've been on the same journey as you. Think win, win!

"Free parking? In the back streets opposite the meetup spot. There's maybe 2 hour free parking. Beware...Ranger Danger!"
"Sounds great, but I'll be stuck in Mona Vale :("
"Here's a map of The Fairy Bower: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=-33.799294,151.29757 If you're coming from the city, catch the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay (30 min) and walk to The Bower (10 min walk)...."
"Manly Photobooth "Hi, I'm a disposable camera, and i'll be at manly beach every so often for a free photo. My owner attached me to a tree and leaves me be for a while. ... MoreSo, come down and find me, and ill post the photos here for you to see." Check out the blog here. Pretty funny idea, but it looks like the person doing it hasn't gotten over the camera being stolen. The blog hasn't been updated since November 2009. What a shame. Cheers Mark "
"What a beautiful morning at Bondi. Waves looked great from the shore, but as Gareth says, it was competitive in the line up. I counted four people on one wave and nobody wanted to obey the rule...."
"Do we finally get to see your Jay?!!"
